Early this morning, Apple silently refreshed its online store and released a refreshed iPad mini alongside the mid-range iPad Air. Here’s everything we know about the refreshed iPad mini.
Since the original, iPad mini has amassed a loyal following over the years thanks to its small form factor and powerful features.
The 2019 iPad mini features a laminated 7.9-inch Retina display with 2048-by-1536 resolution at 326 pixels per inch, with P3 Wide Color Gamut, and True Tone. The new iPad mini also has Apple Pencil 1st-generation support, making it an excellent bit of kit.
A12 Bionic comes to the iPad mini
Apple’s most powerful chip, the A12 Bionic, comes to the iPad mini. With the A12 Bionic, the iPad mini is the smallest, most powerful tablet on the market. Featuring a 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU, the iPad mini cuts through your entire workflow like butter.
The new iPad mini also takes advantage of the Apple Neural Engine for stunning graphics, advanced AR capability, and advanced Core ML with machine learning.
According to the press release, “With the A12 Bionic chip, the new iPad mini is a powerful multitasking machine, delivering three times the performance and nine times faster graphics than the iPad mini 4.”
Cameras and Design
The new iPad mini retains the beloved small form factor but packs tons of great features. Like the new mid-range iPad Air, the iPad mini features the A12 Bionic with Neural Engine, but does not offer True Depth or Face ID, instead, has a front-facing 7-megapixel camera and rear-facing 8-megapixel camera. The rear module can capture clear and stable 1080p HD videos.
Regarding the cameras, Apple says, “With advanced front- and back-facing cameras, iPad mini, and iPad Air take gorgeous photos and capture clear and stable 1080p HD videos. The upgraded cameras with exceptional low-light performance and HD video recording are great for document scanning and connecting with friends and family on Group FaceTime calls, and with advanced sensors, help enable immersive AR experiences.”
The new iPad mini is just 6.1 mm thin and weighs just 0.66 pounds for the non-cellular and 0.68 pounds for the cellular model. Like the mid-range iPad Air, Apple kept the 3.5 mm headphone jack on the mini.
Pricing and Availability
The new iPad mini is available in either Space Grey, Silver, or Gold. The standard 64 GB non-cellular configuration is $399. The 256 GB non-cellular model is $549. The cellular models are $529 and $679 respectively.
As of this writing, you can order either iPad Air or iPad mini today and will deliver between Mar 29 – Apr 2.
