During CES 2019, California-based VIZIO Inc. announced they will start offering AirPlay 2 with HomeKit support later this year on their SmartCast Television sets. Here’s everything we know so far.
Apple has never made a CES appearance, leaving many fans with not a lot to look forward to. But, that was until recently, when Samsung announced they had partnered with Apple to bring iTunes and its entire movie and television media library along with AirPlay 2 support to its Smart TVs.
Today, the Irvine, California, based VIZIO, Inc. announced that both AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support are coming to all SmartCast TVs through its updated “SmartCast 3.0” smart TV experience later this year through a software update.
According to the press release by Vizio, “With support for Apple AirPlay 2, millions of VIZIO SmartCast users can effortlessly play videos, music, photos and more directly from their iPhone, iPad, and Mac to SmartCast TVs. HomeKit, Apple’s secure smart home platform, will also be supported, enabling customers to easily control their SmartCast TVs using the Home app or by asking Siri.”
You will soon be able to control your SmartCast TV with your HomePod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch, through Siri. “VIZIO SmartCast TVs can be added to the Home app and included in scenes or automations like any other HomeKit accessory,” says Vizio. With HomeKit integration, you will be able to create multi-room audio setups, and support for mirroring from iOS and Mac products, and more.
Furthermore, you can use your voice to control your TV with Siri. Commands like “Hey Siri, turn on my Vizio TV” or “Hey Siri, it’s movie night” for scene control. Additionally, you will also be able to control volume, turn your TV on or off, and switch inputs, all with using Siri.
After the announcement, Apple updated their AirPlay site to reflect the addition of third-party TV support. Apple added information on third-party support, third-party HomeKit, and voice control.
“At our core, VIZIO is committed to delivering value. SmartCast 3.0 is one of the ways we’re doing just that. By adding support for Apple AirPlay 2 and HomeKit, users can play content from their iPhone, iPad, and Mac directly to SmartCast TVs, and enable TV controls through the Home app and Siri,” said Bill Baxter, Chief Technology Officer, VIZIO.
Vizio says support for AirPlay 2 and HomeKit on VIZIO SmartCast TVs will be available for registered beta members across the U.S. and Canada to experience in Q1 2019, then after the beta, SmartCast 3.0 will roll out via free cloud-based updates to new and existing SmartCast TVs and displays in Q2 2019.
Update, 11:14 PM ET: Alongside Samsung, LG, and Vizio, Sony has also announced HomeKit and AirPlay 2 support for its Android Powered TVs. Sony says its A9G OLED 4K, Z9G 8K LCD and X950G series, are the only models slated to receive the update. You can read the press release here.
