Apple today released the Firmware Update 7.8 for the 802.11n AirPort Express models, bringing AirPlay 2 support to the wireless router devices. AirPort Express users can download and install the latest firmware via the AirPort Utility app on their iOS device.
After updating, you can see that AirPort Express has appeared in the list of devices that Supports AirPlay 2 on iOS devices running iOS 11.4.1 or iOS 12. With support for AirPlay 2, the 2012 AirPort Express can now streaming multi-room audio and can be used with other AirPlay 2 devices such as HomePod, Apple TV, and Sonos speakers.
Apple announced its withdrawal from the wireless routing market in April this year, and the AirPort brand has completely faded away history. Still, Apple is commendable for updating the firmware to support the latest technology for the AirPort Express devices in use.
